God of War movie a step in ‘bold’ new direction – Report

God of War film writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan say that the project will be different from films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals.

The upcoming God of War movie from Universal Studios will aim to differentiate itself from other films with similar themes.

Kratos' big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.

Kratos’ big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.

According to the film’s writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (who previously wrote Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D), the big screen adaptation of Sony’s popular gaming franchise will improve on films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals by taking a step in a bolder direction.

“Those movies can inform the God of War to step in a more bold direction,” Dunstan told ShockTillYouDrop.com.

“Not to join those ranks, but to stand head and shoulders apart like other reinventions have done within that genre. The satisfying element is to look at those movies as a commentary on the genre, and now say something different.”

Melton also revealed that Sony encouraged the duo to make the movie different from what’s already out there in the same genre.

Charles Roven and Alex Garnter, producers of the forthcoming film based on Naughty Dog’s Uncharted action franchise, are producing the God of War movie via Atlas Entertainment.

No mention was made of a director or actors for the film, and a release date has not been nailed down.

God of War: Ascension is due out in March 2013. It is a prequel to the original trilogy, and the first entry in the series to sport a multiplayer component. For more on the project, check out GameSpot’s latest preview.

Kojima wants to look beyond Metal Gear

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima says that he wants to be remembered for more than just the iconic series; reveals upcoming Metal Gear games will introduce concepts intended for new intellectual properties.

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has revealed that upcoming entries in the gaming franchise will introduce concepts intended to hint at a new wave of intellectual properties utilising the Metal Gear brand.

Speaking to EGM, Kojima said that he wants to be remembered for doing a lot more than just creating the iconic series.

“I’ll admit that I hope my future endeavours are thought of as ‘works by Hideo Kojima’ rather than ‘from the creator of Metal Gear’,” he told the publication. “I haven’t really shown the world what else I might be capable of yet. This may sound pretentious, but I don’t like being thought of as the Metal Gear guy. There’s a lot more I can do.”

In the interview, Kojima also spoke about the influence of games such as Grand Theft Auto III, a title which he said “opened” his eyes.

Kojima did not confirm whether the statement outlining the introduction of new concepts in upcoming Metal Gear games was in reference to Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes or future titles in the franchise.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was officially unveiled earlier this year. Kojima later revealed that the game would include Peace Walker’s Mother Base mechanic, as well as a day/night cycle.

Dead Island Riptide will not be published in Germany – Report

Game’s creative producer reveals that there will be no censored version of the game in Germany due to country’s laws prohibiting violence against human-like characters.

A Dead Island: Riptide developer has criticised Germany’s laws restricting the sale of violent media, revealing that the upcoming title will not be published in the country.

The island-themed zombie horror continues in 2013.

The island-themed zombie horror continues in 2013.

In an interview with PCGamesN, Dead Island Riptide creative producer Sebastian Reichert told the publication that there would be no censored version of the game.

“We have no censored version of the game, so we cannot release it in Germany,” Reichert said. “It feels [’] awkward to have one of the most successful games in years and nobody in your country knows it.”

Reichert explained that the game will not be able to be published in Germany due to the country’s laws prohibiting violence against human-like characters; for the original Dead Island–which was banned in Germany–the problem was the fact that players could attack zombies, which, according to Reichert, was seen as mutilation of corpses.

Reichert went on to question why other games released in Germany were seemingly not subject to the same treatment.

“At the moment, I’m really confused that you can buy Gears of War 3 in stores in Germany, but not Dead Island. Because, where’s the difference? [The enemies in Gears of War 3] are human-like, and [players] can do things to them. That’s in stores.”

According to the publication, Dead Island Riptide is due out on April 26, 2013. The game is a follow-up to last year’s zombie shooter and boasts new weather effects, like flooding, as well as general upgrades to its game engine. The game takes place on another island of the archipelago depicted in the original game.

In addition, Dead Island Riptide players will be able to import save information from the original Dead Island. The game is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

The original Dead Island was developed by Techland and released in September 2011 to generally positive review scores. The game has shipped 4.5 million units as of August this year.

GTAV PC petition reaches 100,000 signatures

Online petition adds 50,000 signatures in two days calling on Rockstar to release open-world action game for PC.

The Change.org petition calling on Rockstar Games to release a PC version of Grand Theft Auto V now stands at over 100,000 signatures. This is a marked increase from the 50,000 the petition had amassed just two days ago.

The petition says it is a “big shame” that GTAV is not announced for PC, specifically calling out the modding community being a “huge part” of PC gaming.

“Modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have,” a line from the petition reads.

Rockstar Games has not officially acknowledged the petition, and a representative was not immediately available to comment.

Last week, Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser said PC and Wii U versions of GTAV were “up for consideration.” The most recent entry, 2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV, released for PC seven months after the console versions shipped.

GTAV is officially due out during spring 2013 only for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

PS3 sales hit 525,000 during Black Friday

Sony sells half a million consoles last week in US alongside more than 160,000 PS Vita units; PS Plus subscriptions rise 259 percent.

Sony sold 525,000 PlayStation 3 consoles and more than 160,000 PlayStation Vita units in the United States during the Black Friday week (November 18-24), the company announced today. Total PS3 sales (hardware, software, and peripherals) jumped 9 percent year-over-year. Sony saw particular success in Latin America, where year-on-year sales rose 200 percent.

Concerning the PS Vita, this is the first holiday period the device has been on the market, meaning year-over-year sales information is not available. Sony said its $200 Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation bundle was especially popular, with major e-retailer Amazon selling through its entire stock in under five hours.

Other popular PS Vita bundles included the Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes offerings, which sold out at retail during the week, Sony said.

In addition to increased hardware sales, Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription service also saw a jump in membership. PS Plus subscription sales through the PlayStation Network rose 259 percent compared to last year.

Sony is the last of the Big Three (Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony) to announce Black Friday sales. Nintendo sold 400,000 Wii U consoles, 300,000 Wii units, 250,000 3DS systems, and 275,000 DS portables during the week. Microsoft sold 750,000 Xbox 360 consoles and saw Xbox Live subscriptions rise 50 percent year-over-year.
