Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 not coming to Wii U due to budget constraints

Konami explains it would have to add another 20 developers at Mercury Steam to port game to Wii U, which is not feasible.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will not come to Wii U due to budget constraints. Speaking to Eurogamer, Konami producer Dave Cox said the publisher does not have the resources to create the necessary jobs at developer Mercury Steam to make the game possible.

“The reason why we are developing it on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 is simply because that’s the amount of people we got,” Cox said. “If we want to do a Wii U conversion, that’s another 20 people. We just don’t have the resources or the budget to do it.”

Cox made clear that it’s not for lack of interest, but adding a new format this late in development would not be wise, he said.

“It’s not to say we wouldn’t do it, it’s to say at this point we don’t want to lose focus on what we’re doing,” he said. “We’ve got a certain way down the line, and it would be a distraction to have to do a port to another system at this point.”

Even if Konami had the resources to bring on the necessary developers to make a Wii U version of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 possible, the Mercury Steam office space may not be big enough to accommodate them.

“Also, the Mercury Steam office is at breaking point right now. It’s rammed,” Cox said. “They bought the office for 60 people, and there are 110 now. People are sitting on each other’s laps almost. It’s all these kind of logistical issues about the development.”

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is currently in development for Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3. 3DS game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate launches March 5. A demo for that game is available to download through the 3DS eShop today.

Kellee Santiago lands at Ouya

thatgamecompany cofounder to lead developer relations for Android-powered console company; Ouya units shipping March 28.

Journey developer thatgamecompany cofounder Kellee Santiago has joined Ouya, where she will lead developer relations for the Android-powered console, the company announced today.

Speaking about her new position in a statement, Santiago said Ouya has achieved what other console makers still have not.

“This is the first console company that really understands how important it is to remove the barriers to development,” she said.

Santiago co-founded thatgamecompany six years ago with creative director Jenova Chen, whom she worked with at the University of Southern California on the experimental game Cloud. She left the company last March.

In addition, Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman announced today that Ouya units will ship to backers beginning March 28. The small-sized console’s full launch is set for June, where systems will be available through major retail partners like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and GameStop.

Uhrman also revealed that Portal designer Kim Swift and her Airtight Games studio are developing a new game to release exclusively on Ouya. An official announcement of that game is expected soon.

What’s more, Papo & Yo developer Minority Media is bringing a new adventure game to the console and Killing Floor developer Tripwire Interactive will release first-person shooter The Ball and a new title through Ouya.

The Ouya is priced at $99.99, with the touch-screen controllers going for $49.99. A new version of the system is expected to launch every year in an effort to take advantage of falling component prices.

Gran Turismo 6 is a PlayStation 3 game, says Sony exec

SCEE senior vice president Michael Denny mentions GT6 in a list of upcoming PlayStation 3 titles.

Gran Turismo 6 could be heading to the PlayStation 3 as one of its swan-song titles, a Sony executive has said.

Speaking to Silicon Republic about how the PlayStation 3 still has plenty to offer despite the unveiling of the PlayStation 4, SCEE senior vice president Michael Denny name-dropped some upcoming highlights for the current-gen machine. “Look at the games coming out on the PlayStation 3,” said Denny, “like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6, and then on the third-party side of things another fantastic Assassin’s Creed, GTA.”

Sony last week unveiled the PlayStation 4 for the first time, saying the machine would launch later in 2013. Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Gran Turismo developer Polyphony Digital, appeared in a video at the event to describe the PlayStation 4 as so easy to use it was like a “blank canvas” for game creators.

Motorstorm creator Evolution Studios announced Drive Club, a realistic next-gen racer, as part of its PlayStation 4 unveiling.

Development on Gran Turismo 6 was confirmed by Polyphony Digital in 2010.
